    Dr Stephen Gale has been re-appointed telecommunications commissioner and a member of the Commerce Commission for a further three years when his current term ends on 11 July.

  • Telecommunications reforms finalised

    Communications minister Simon Bridges has revealed final details of the Government’s telecommunications reforms, expected to come into force from 2020, saying they will introduce a more predictable utility-style model for Ultra-Fast Broadband (UFB) fibre, deregulate copper lines where fibre is available, and improve the quality of service for consumers by increasing regulatory oversight.

    2degrees has reported its first profit, for the year ending December 31 2016, saying it doubled the size of its fixed broadband subscriber base during the year, albeit from a small base: it was only the first full year for the service.

  • Minister trumpets UFB progress

    Communications minister Simon Bridges has announced release of the March 2017 Quarterly Broadband Update saying it shows the number of households, business, schools and hospitals connected to UFB has increased 12 percent in the past three months to almost 4000,000 and that deployment for phase one of the UFB programme is almost three-quarters complete, providing 1,103,000 households and businesses with access to download speeds of close to 1Gbps.
