Compuware and Devtest Ensure the Quality and Performance of Official Rugby World Cup Website
Compuware and Devtest achieved a major victory during Rugby World Cup 2003 by assisting Microsoft to deliver the official World Cup website in under three months. The site, which received 495 million hits - 10 million in the first hour alone - during RWC 2003, is one of the most traffic-intensive sites ever built. Microsoft, who developed the project for Unisys (official supplier of IT services for Rugby World Cup since 1991) had to deliver a web site that was robust and reliable. This task was made easier with the testing expertise of Devtest and the right tools from Compuware (QACenter and Vantage). Unisys, who won the contract to provide a functionally rich and high-volume site for RWC 2003, turned to Microsoft to help build it. In anticipation of the high volume of traffic across the site, Microsoft selected Devtest to undertake a complex testing and build management process. This involved running tools from Compuware to reduce the test cycle, simulating a high volume of virtual users and monitoring the response time of critical pages. “There was no margin for error in this project,” said Paul Roworth, Enterprise Marketing Manager at Microsoft. “With an immovable deadline of the start of the tournament and millions of insatiable rugby fans accessing the same web pages at the same time, we had to be absolutely confident that the site delivered a great customer experience. Using Devtest and Compuware enabled us to stringently test the site ahead of the go-live and deliver a high quality experience. For Devtest’s team of six testers, this was an extensive task. They used Visual Studio .NET 2003 to work with 404 Visual C# .NET code pages, 285 ASP.NET pages and 111 User Controls. The testing group ran 1,180 test cases daily to ensure they delivered a stable site. This intensive testing process involved running Compuware’s automated testing suite, QACenter, to complete following stages: • Developing a suite of scripts that significantly reduced the time taken to complete the test cycle • Using scripts to pre-populate the site allowing testers to verify that it responded as expected • Navigating through the site to identify problem pages and broken links • Simulating >30,000 virtual users for performance testing
To ensure rapid download times, the team undertook an extensive performance testing program. This involved running Compuware’s performance management solution Vantage monitor the response times of critical web pages in order to meet Microsoft’s business requirements.
“Using an automated testing solution was critical when working to such a tight timeframe,” explains Sarah Richey, Managing Director, Devtest. “The website was developed in multiple languages and to test them all manually would have tripled the cost and duration of the project. Without the Compuware tools, we would have required significantly more testing resources to deliver the site to the required quality and within the immovable timeframe”.
