Technology helps small business access PR tools
One significant benefit that technology such as the Internet brings to small to medium sized Australian businesses is access to expertise and knowledge that was once out of reach.
businesspublicity, Australia's first Internet-based public relations consulting service, is an example of a specialist service that is using technology to help and assist businesses that were unable to take advantage of public relations advice in the past.
Its principal, Ms Claudia Pritchitt, says that businesspublicity shows what the Internet is capable of providing - a fully professional, flexible virtual consultancy at a much lower cost than traditional approaches.
"The Internet allows businesspublicity to reduce operate as a virtual consultancy – reducing our business overheads and offering our expertise at a very low cost. The majority of communications are undertaken through email and on-line forums, and processes are explained in ‘private’ login sections of web sites,” said Ms Pritchitt.
"The cost benefits achieved are passed on to clients, making PR affordable for them.”
Ms Pritchitt said that the approach has proved that with the Internet it doesn’t matter where you are and can work with people regardless of location.
“One of the benefits of being Internet-based is that we can advise companies throughout Australia as easily as we can a local business, giving a seamless service and instant response,” said Ms Pritchitt.
Ms Pritchitt said she does not know of any similar Internet-based public relations service currently available for Australian businesses where the key element is that it is relationship-based rather than a once-off service – such as writing a particular media release.
“However, the idea is already getting international attention and a number of overseas based associates are interested in taking it up. We have easily been able to transfer codes and content to allow the service to be set up efficiently in international marketplaces,” she said.
“We can expect to see this Australian developed approach introduced shortly in Europe and the USA, and it has already being introduced in New Zealand.”
