Introduction

Occupant Classification Systems (OCS), Seat Occupant Sensors (SOS), Occupant Detection Systems (ODS), Passenger Weight Systems (PWS) are names for the various passenger safety systems designed to detect the actual presence of a passenger in the seat. The safety systems are in every vehicle manufactured today. Each of these systems perform very similar functions, although each Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) can have specific and potentially different procedures for repairing and recalibrating their system after an accident. Proper vehicle repair plans (VRPs) should always address the OEM required seat recalibration steps necessary to put these systems back in working order after an accident. To avoid confusion, we will refer to them all as OCS.

How Occupant Classification Systems Work Regardless of the component materials, (bladder types, bolt type weight sensors, pressure sensitive mats, etc.) OCSs are critical to front passenger’s safety. OCSs detect the presence of the passenger, a passenger’s approximate weight, and the front passenger’s seating position within the passenger compartment. This is critical information for proper passenger side airbag deployment. OCS data is used to determine if the airbag should be deployed, and the velocity at which it should be deployed as a result of a collision. Different deployment velocities are used depending on the weight of the passenger.
