Trio of Leading Scientists to Speak at NVIDIA GPU Technology Conference (GTCx) Australia
Three prominent figures from government, industry and academia will speak this week at GTCx Australia, an extension of NVIDIA’s GPU Technology Conference, the world’s largest and most important event for GPU developers, held annually in Silicon Valley.
Kicking things off is Victorian Lead Scientist Dr Amanda Caples, who will deliver a welcome address on October 4 at 9am.
Following Dr Caples, NVIDIA Fellow Dr David B. Kirk, a former chief scientist at NVIDIA who led the development of graphics architecture and technology, will deliver the opening address.
Kirk was honoured by the California Institute of Technology in 2009 with a Distinguished Alumni Award, its highest honour, for his work in the graphics-technology industry. He is the inventor of more than 75 patents and patent applications relating to graphics design and has published many articles on graphics technology and parallel programming.
A second address will be delivered by Professor Anton van den Hengel, director of the Australian Centre for Visual Technologies, the programme lead for the Analytics and Decision Support Programme of the Data 2 Decisions CRC, and a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Adelaide. He has published more than 200 papers and leads a group of over 60 researchers working in computer vision and machine learning. Prof. van den Hengel has received a number of awards, including the Pearcey Award for Innovation and the CVPR Best Paper Award in 2010.
Co-hosting GTCx Australia is Monash University, one of the country’s leading research universities. The collaboration between Monash University and NVIDIA builds on an agreement signed in February to power a new wave of GPU-accelerated research, the first step toward a deeply integrated research and development programme. This is evidence of Monash’s commitment to foster and increase levels of collaboration between the Monash precinct and Australian industry.
NVIDIA and Monash will jointly fund research students, facilitate access to GPU-accelerated computing technologies and leverage their worldwide network of experts to provide industry-relevant training and knowledge exchange. In addition, Monash University has invited Dr Le Lu from the United States National Institutes of Health to present on his recent work. Dr Lu uses NVIDIA technology to help medical doctors apply artificial intelligence techniques to process large data set to make more informed diagnostic decisions.
At GTCx Australia, Monash University will have two speakers – Professor Tom Drummond, leader of the Computer Vision Lab, and Dr Wojtek James Goscinski, manager of High Performance Computing at the Monash eResearch Centre.
