Microsoft, Amazon Plan E-Bookstore

SAN FRANCISCO (08/28/2000) - Microsoft Corp. and Amazon.com Inc. are creating a new co-branded electronic bookstore, officials from the companies said Monday during a speech at the Seybold San Francisco conference.
Dick Brass, Microsoft vice president of technology development, mentioned the e-bookstore project during his keynote presentation here and said that the online venture would be created "as soon as possible."
Amazon will offer Microsoft Reader as the "preferred format and preferred reading appliance" as part of the deal, which also will allow users to download customized versions of Microsoft Reader at the Amazon.com Web site.
More about the deal between the two companies is expected to be revealed during a news conference here at 10 a.m. PDT.
