DECUS changes identity again

The user group for HP, Compaq and Digital Equipment has changed its name yet again.
HP-DECUS decided before Christmas to rebrand itself HP EncompassNZ to fit in with an equivalent US organisation that dropped its DECUS tag in 2000.
Group head Alan Dick says DECUS board members felt the change was needed to move away from a view that the group concentrated mainly on Digital Equipment, or DEC, issues.
Last year’s merger between HP and Compaq saw HP users join the group, creating HP-DECUS, in place of the former Compaq-DECUS, which, in turn, followed the original Digital Equipment User Group, after Compaq merged with Digital in 1998.
Rotorua-based Dick says he is still “building up” membership of the combined organisation, planning to double its almost 300 base.
The former HP-DECUS group staged technical sessions involving HP experts from Canada and Germany last September and Dick says further meetings are planned.
HP EncompassNZ, he says, is working on sponsoring events with HP, but talks are at an early stage so he cannot reveal what is planned. The group is still also trying to trace board members from the former users of the “heritage” HP.
The 500-member OZTUG (Australian Tandem User Group) and 1000-member Australian DECUS will carry on with their current identities, Dick says.
