Dear What am I Worth,

I am 26 and work as a senior AS/400 operator for a company with 200-plus users. My duties include monitoring system performance, backups, restores, user management, IPLs, data transfers, batch processing and reclaiming storage, to mention a few. I have three years' experience.

I also have a national certificate in computing level 3 and an advanced AS/400 operating certificate.

I consider myself to have intermediate/advanced skills with Microsoft Office applications. I am working in Auckland with no expectations of working elsewhere at this time.

Staying put

Candle IT&T recruitment replies: AS/400 skills are not in high demand and this is unlikely to change in the near future. If possible, you should consider expanding your skills into other areas.

You could consider operational support or taking up some training in a quite different direction such as Java, Visual Basic or C++ programming. In the Auckland market, remuneration for your skills and experience is in the range of $45,000 to $50,000.
