Dell releases all-in-one printer

Dell launched its first printers into the local market last week and, for this reason, sent us a printer to test.
Printers may not be on the list of things that would normally make me jump, but this is actually a cool little printer.
The 926 Photo All-in-One Printer is an inkjet printer with fax, scan, copy and print features. It also has a range of photo printing options. It is aimed at personal and small business users.
The 926 started collecting credits when I unpacked it — simply because it is white. The good feeling continued when we plugged it in to a computer running Vista and it auto-installed. I didn’t have to do anything (which is always a good thing).
It hooks up directly to a digital camera via USB, so I connected our camera and printed a couple of photos and that worked well enough. We then tested printing from Picasa, which is Google’s photo management software. We wanted a big print so we set out print to A4 and borderless, and the results were excellent. Of course, we were using the high gloss photo paper included.
The printer also has a memory card slot which will allow you to print photos, print a proof sheet or copy the photos to your PC from the printer.
According to Dell, the 926 can produce monochrome printouts at 20 pages per minute, and 4800x1200 dpi print resolution colour printouts at up to 15 pages per minute. The integrated flatbed scanner scans media in 48-bit full colour at up to 1200x2400 optical dpi, and can scan directly into emails and other applications, says Dell.
The printer also supports a range of paper sizes, including, A4, B5, A5, A6, L, L2, envelope, postcard, index card and banners.
Another handy feature is that the 926 automatically monitors printer usage and alerts the user when ink levels are low. It then provides online ordering of replacement ink which will be delivered to your doorstep, says Dell. However, when I tried this from the link in the printer options window the website was not found.
Dell’s 926 Photo All-in-One Printer can be yours for $159 delivered. You will need to add a few extras like a USB cable (unless you have one lying around from some other gadget), paper and extra ink.
