NZ Transport Agency puts IT projects on hold

The recently launched New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) has placed its new IT projects on hold as it undergoes integration.
The NZTA was created in August, following a merger between Land Transport New Zealand and Transit New Zealand. But it looks set to be the New Year before the new body has assessed its priorities and can move forward under new leadership.
“It is still early days in the integration of Land Transport NZ and Transit New Zealand ’s information technology departments and systems, and it will be several months before we have a definitive overview of what is happening in regards to the reprioritisation of IT projects,” acting CIO Tony West told Computerworld.
“It is normal for merging organisations to reprioritise projects, as two information technology teams integrate their systems and processes, but as this is still a work in progress it would be premature to make any announcements at this point.”
West said no CIO or equivalent had been appointed by the new body yet. An appointment is expected in the coming months. There have also been no job losses in the IT teams resulting from the merger.
“Bringing together the information systems of two large organisations is a huge undertaking and will be informed by the direction provided by the CIO, or equivalent, once appointed.
“It is unlikely to be until early next year that we can confirm our long-term approach to information technology. In the meantime, we will continue to use our existing systems and look for innovative solutions that will help our integration go smoothly,” West’s statement adds.
Among the projects on hold is Transit’s “video viewer” project, which uses laser scanners to map 11,000 kms of state highway. Developed in association with e-spatial, the project uses GPS-equipped vehicles.
E-Spatial CIO Matti Seikkula recently told Microsoft’s TechEd conference that the technology had other uses too, such as Navman-type navigation.
