Vodafone to launch Blackberry services in New Zealand

Vodafone New Zealand Ltd. will launch the Blackberry service in New Zealand "later this year" says spokeswoman Sarah Williams.

Blackberry is the online service which automatically pushes e-mail to a user's phone. Currently users of either Vodafone's network or Telecom's 027 network have to call up their e-mail accounts to see if new mail has arrived. This way the user is notified as mail as received at the server.

The service has proven very popular overseas and Vodafone U.K. has been offering the service since late last year. The service runs alongside Vodafone's own Mobile Connect Card solution rather than as a replacement.

A number of GPRS phones are available with Blackberry capability -- Sony Ericsson has licensed the interface for its P900 model which is already on sale in New Zealand.

Blackberry works with a number of leading e-mail packages.
