Freeview has launched its first Live TV streaming platform, the DishTV SmartVU X, in collaboration with Pukete-based company DishTV, HiSilicon — a Chinese fabless semiconductor company based in Shenzhen, owned by Huawei — and Google, and what it says is New Zealand's first Android TV powered PVR, also developed in partnership with Dish TV and Google.

The STB enables New Zealanders to watch broadcast TV over their Internet connection,

The DishTV SmartVU X, will offer streaming live TV at launch along with existing IPTV service such as Netflix, Lightbox, Stuff Pix, YouTube, and Freeview On Demand in the new year.  Freeview said it would announce more content partnerships in the near future.

According to Freeview is it the first device to provide streaming Freeview channels via IP, the first 1GB RAM device to pass Android TV and Netflix certification with 1080P UI + 4K-HDR. It will launch with Android 8.0 Oreo and will receive the Android 9 Pie update. It will sell for $139.

Freeview CEO, Jason Foden said an estimated 10 percent of New Zealand households did not have access to broadcast TV by either terrestrial or satellite broadcasts.

Freeview says the PVR would come with multiple UHF and satellite tuners and could connect to an existing UHF aerial or satellite dish, enabling simultaneous recording, including series linking, across multiple channels.

It comes with Chromecast built-in and 1TB hard drive capable of storing up to 500 hours of recorded content, according to Freeview. It costs $439.
