Canada, US health institutes join to research diseases

FRAMINGHAM (10/21/2003) - The Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the National Institutes of Health have formed a partnership to advance cardiovascular and respiratory disease research. Together, the two organizations will launch three programs next year. One of the programs will fund cellular and molecular imaging of heart, lung, and blood systems to better understand the diseases. This program could ultimately lead to new cell-based therapies to treat these diseases. The other programs are aimed at improving management and current treatment approaches as they are applied to these diseases. The programs will run in multiple locations in the United States and Canada for several years. Both organizations will begin funding these projects later this year.
