Fully automated liquid handling system makes splash

FRAMINGHAM (10/23/2003) - According to TekCel Inc., the company's new TekBench-SP (Sample Processing) is the first fully automated liquid handling platform for the processing of tube- and plate-based samples in a fully enclosed inert workspace.

The compact system includes four dynamically exchangeable pipetting tools with flow-through wash stations, which operate independent of the robotic arm, to minimize cross-contamination and increase processing efficiency. Randomly accessible storage for up to 1,008 microplates is integrated below the deck. There is also five carousels' worth of space for containers and consumables. All sample processing tasks, such as tube piercing, active thawing, reformatting, replicating and so on, are performed in the TekBench-SP workspace's inert (anhydrous nitrogen) atmosphere. A controlled active-thaw utility is designed to accelerate sample processing.

TekBench-SP can be integrated into TekCel's Tube Management System, enabling 2-D bar code reading for individual tube tracking and tube rack mapping.

Tube Management System Fills Out, Flows Downstream

TekCel has expanded the capabilities of its Tube Management System, which includes TubeStore, TubeServer, and TekBench-SP, to include additional tube storage formats, capacities up to 225,000 tubes per module, and inert environmental control through downstream processing.
