The installed base of digital mobile phones in Europe climbed 61 percent in 1995 to 23 million subscribers, according to a report by market researcher Dataquest UK Ltd.
Growth came at the expense of analogue system usage, which fell from 800,000 to less than 600,000 subscribers by the end of the year, according to Dataquest. The increase in digital phone use is due to falling prices of the mobile phone hand-sets and increased network coverage, says the report. The largest markets are the UK, Germany, Italy and Sweden, which account for almost two-thirds of the total European market.
