As if Apple's new head doesn't have enough to handle just shoring up the beleaguered company, now Gilbert Amelio will temporarily take over the helm of research and development.
Amelio will assume the role as Apple's acting head of R&D until a replacement is named for David Nagel, Apple's senior vice-president of R&D, who is leaving to become the president of AT&T Laboratories.
Nagel, who left NASA's Ames Research Centre in 1988 to join Apple as head of the advanced technology group, later became a senior vice-president and general manager of Apple's now-defunct AppleSoft division, before last's year reorganisation that gave him control of all hardware and software research and development.
Apple has lost more than 16 vice presidents in the past 16 months. --
