The SafeSurf organisation has developed a server that will offer a rating service for Internet content that is compatible with the Platform for Internet Content Selection (PICS) promoted by the World Wide Web Consortium and others, SafeSurf has announced.
The server, which includes a combination of custom software, hardware and the SafeSurf Rating System, will enable filtering companies, Internet service providers and parent groups to operate their own Internet rating services.
The SafeSurf Rating Server, designed to communicate with any PICS-compatible filtering software, will respond to standardised PICS queries about specific Web sites. It will send back the rating service's evaluations to help the client software make content-filtering decisions.
The SafeSurf Web site at http://www.safesurf.com provides a form that content providers can fill out to create their own custom rating for their site.
