Brother, can you spare a network computer?

Word processor and typewriter maker Brother International is signing on with Oracle to develop a network computer appliance.

Word processor and typewriter maker Brother International is signing on with Oracle to develop a network computer appliance.

The agreement calls for Brother to help Oracle further develop the NC Reference Profile 1, a general platform for network computing, and then implement the specifications into future products.

The network computer is right up Brother's alley, as the company has made a niche for itself developing simple computing machines. Its word processors are simple computers, generally without hard drives.

Oracle officials imagine the network computer to be a similar device; it cannot perform any complex functions on its own but allows users to access the Internet for such tasks.
