Verisign, Visa partner on secure electronic commerce

Visa has picked Verisign to run an authentication service based on the Secure Electronic Transactions (SET) specification, company officials have announced.

SET is the security protocol developed by Visa and MasterCard International to protect credit card transactions over the Internet. Verisign will run a digital certificate service for Visa, which will be used by financial institutions that belong to Visa and want to offer secure commerce services over the Internet, officials say.

Independent software vendors who want to develop SET-certified applications can now get test certificates from Verisign's Web site, http://www.verisign.com.
