Scotland Yard ends probe of hackers abusing police phones

Investigations into hackers using a PBX based at the British Police headquarters at New Scotland Yard have been closed.

Investigations into hackers using a PBX based at the British Police headquarters at New Scotland Yard have been closed. The hackers accessed the PBX in order to route calls to the US, leaving Scotland Yard with the bill.

The investigation was carried out by Scotland Yard's Fraud Squad in the UK and AT&T's Fraud Investigation Division in the US, but no arrests have been made. "There was no risk to information held by Scotland Yard or any evidence of eavesdropping," says a Scotland Yard spokeswoman. "All the hackers got were cheap rate phone calls to the United States," she says.
