IBM has launched a Web site where users can download, toy with and give feedback on some of its newest Web technologies months before they are released as products and services, the company has announced.
The alphaWorks site features all types of products, from sophisticated Java programming tools to simple applets, that are currently being developed by IBM's 26,000 researchers worldwide. Located at http://www.alphaWorks.ibm.com, the site has opened with six nascent technologies, including an applet development kit and a program for creating 3D images for Web sites. The company says the site will be updated weekly.
Visitors to the site will find a brief description of each technology, including system and installation requirements, and must then accept an online licensing agreement for personal use of the technology to download it.
IBM says it will eventually make alphaWorks open to third-party developers to place their own alpha-stage technologies on the site.
