Netscape to develop 'Net software for consumer devices

Netscape has formed a subsidiary company to build its Internet software into televisions and other consumer devices.

Netscape has formed a subsidiary company to build its Internet software into televisions and other consumer devices, extending its ongoing browser-war with Microsoft away from just the PC arena, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The subsidiary, called Navio Communications, will first work to develop a version of Netscape for televisions, and later embed the browser technology into video game players, telephones and network computers, as well as other products, the Journal says.

In forming the subsidiary, Netscape hopes to establish its technology as the industry standard in an area where Microsoft software is not already dominant.
