Microsoft has released on its Web site its search server, code-named Tripoli and officially named Microsoft Index Server. It runs alongside Microsoft's Internet Information Server 2.0 on the Windows NT 4.0 Server and indexes all documents stored on intranet or Internet sites.

Index Server will allow searches for text in word documents, for statistics in Excel spreadsheets and for HTML content. For full indexing, it requires disk space equaling 40% of the material to be indexed. Index Server is available for free at http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/search/.
