Search engine company Lycos has announced the launch of Lycos City Guide, a World Wide Web-based service that will provide news and information about the 400 most populous US Cities. The City Guides will contain some editorial content developed by Lycos, but will mainly contain lists of categorised links to Web sites containing local news, history, entertainment, maps, sports and weather, according to the company. In addition, Web surfers can do Yellow Pages-like searches for local businesses.
Some of the cities included are Boston; New York; Grand Rapids, Michigan; Youngstown, Ohio; Santa Barbara, California; and Las Vegas. The Lycos City Guides for all 400 cities are now available at http://cityguide.lycos.com.
Lycos City Guides will go up against some tough competition from other search engine companies that have similar city services. Yahoo organises Web sites into regional categories and has specialised guides to the San Francisco Bay area, Los Angeles and New York, and Excite offers City.Net, which has information about US and international destinations such as Portland, Oregon and Madrid.
Software giant Microsoft also has its hand in the city guide pie with its CityScape online service, which will feature content developed by Microsoft in conjunction with local publications in major US cities with links to city-specific Web sites. Today, many large cities and small towns also have their own Web sites dedicated to local lore, such as the New York Web at http://www.nyw.com or the San Jose Living site at http://wwwsjliving.com.
However, Lycos is the first to launch such an extensive listing of cities accessible all in one place, company officials say.
