Olitec, a French modem maker, next month will release a 33.6Kbit/s fax/modem that doesn't require a computer to be turned on in order to receive incoming faxes and messages.

The Olitec Self Memory works both with PC and Macintosh computers and can keep 20 voice messages and more than 50 faxed pages in memory. The modem automatically recognises if an incoming call is a phone call or a fax transmission.

The devices is about the size of a pack of cigarettes and will sell for US$289. Olitec can be reached on the Web at http://www.olitec.com.
