Landcare Web site marks out NZ in cyberspace

Landcare New Zealand has put up the first interactive mapping site in New Zealand.

Landcare New Zealand has put up the first interactive mapping site in New Zealand (http://www.massey.landcare.cri.nz/). Called GUILD-on-the-Web, the service allows you to select the area you want to map (the scale) and the information you want displayed (themes).

The interface guides you through the process of selecting the items of interest. Then you hit a "display" button and the map is displayed at the correct scale with the themes you selected. Saving the map is a bit trickier, but if you go into your cache, you can pull the image and save it in a different directory.

Potential uses of the GUILD site are endless. Not only can you get a good overview of the spatial database holdings of Landcare, but you can use the maps to illustrate a number of online reports, stories or other projects. GUILD is an excellent site and throws down the gauntlet for other spatial data providers to catch up on the technology.
