Compaq aims Windows CE device at businesses

The world's largest PC vendor, Compaq, has launched its first Windows CE device at Comdex.

Compaq, the world's largest PC vendor, has launched its first Windows CE device at this week's Comdex.

Features of the Compaq PC companion include a weight of 0.5kg, either 2Mb or 4Mb configurations, and an optional 2Mb add-on memory module. The device also includes River Run Software Group's Mail on the Run, which provides connectivity to popular email systems, such as Lotus's cc:Mail and Microsoft's Microsoft Mail.

The Compaq PC companion is targeted at corporate users as well as consumers and is available immediately in North America for between US$499 to US$699. In North America, the company has partnered with network service provider SkyTel to offer users optional two-way messaging services.

The device may also be offered to corporate customers "as a sweetener with desktop and server products", says Annie Bacon, Compaq's director of marketing for emerging markets.
