Compaq, the world's largest PC vendor, has launched its first Windows CE device at this week's Comdex.
Features of the Compaq PC companion include a weight of 0.5kg, either 2Mb or 4Mb configurations, and an optional 2Mb add-on memory module. The device also includes River Run Software Group's Mail on the Run, which provides connectivity to popular email systems, such as Lotus's cc:Mail and Microsoft's Microsoft Mail.
The Compaq PC companion is targeted at corporate users as well as consumers and is available immediately in North America for between US$499 to US$699. In North America, the company has partnered with network service provider SkyTel to offer users optional two-way messaging services.
The device may also be offered to corporate customers "as a sweetener with desktop and server products", says Annie Bacon, Compaq's director of marketing for emerging markets.
