Oracle dumps plans for BackOffice rival

Oracle has reportedly pulled the plug on development of a bundle of software applications designed to compete with Microsoft's BackOffice.

Oracle has pulled the plug on development of a bundle of software applications designed to compete with Microsoft's BackOffice, according to a source close to the company.

Code-named Bandwagon, the bundle would have included Oracle's InterOffice groupware, Oracle 7 database, WebServer, and Enterprise Manager.

"The market has been moving very quickly toward the Internet, and we’ve decided to focus on other areas right now," the source says. "We felt we were well covered with these products separately in competing with Microsoft BackOffice, and they don't need to be bundled all together."

"Quietly, people were redeployed to other projects, like to WebServer, over the last several months rather than spend a lot of months putting the products together since they already are shipping on Windows NT," the source says.

Oracle is on the Web at http://www.oracle.com/.
