Microsoft New Zealand is changing its support regime for retail customers.

It is scrapping its 30-day warranty and free support period, replacing it with free support for three “incidents” within 12 months of the date of purchase.

Microsoft says the change recognises the fact that for most customers, after an initial support call within the first three months of buying a piece of software, the need for help doesn’t arise again until the buyers attempts to make more sophisticated use of the application.

The new policy, called AnswerPoint, can be extended beyond 12 months by buying Incident Packs, starting at $99 plus GST for four further incidents.
