Corel has announced a three-part agreement with Netscape designed to offer its software users seamless integration with the Internet - and to counter Microsoft 's worldwide launch of its Office 97 suite.
Under the terms of the nonexclusive agreement, Corel will license and integrate Netscape's forthcoming Communicator client software, which integrates groupware, email and Web browsing capabilities, into the upcoming WordPerfect 8 and Office Professional 8 application suites.
Netscape also will license the WordPerfect 7 suite for internal corporate use and will provide links to the Corel Office for Java suite, which is now available for download from the company's World Wide Web site.
Corel is targeting Microsoft and its Office 97 suite with the addition of Netscape technology. Office 97 includes Outlook, a management component for desktop applications featuring email, scheduling, contacts, tasks and quick access to documents.
Corel will integrate Communicator with its software, which will be optimised to help users publish and share information across the Internet and intranets. For instance, users will be able to send email and browse the Web from within client applications, such as word processing. Also, the Corel applications' interfaces will be modified to look more like the Netscape interfaces, says Chris Biber, a technology evangelist at Corel.
Corel has offered Netscape Navigator bundled with Corel WordPerfect Suite and Corel Office Professional since early 1996.
However, Biber says, "this is not just a bundle."
Corel plans to ship the integrated suite this year, beginning with a beta version of WordPerfect Suite 8 that will be available in February, Biber said.
The upgrade price will be US$100, officials said.
