Microsoft will distribute the Simplified Chinese version of its Internet Explorer browser software over the Internet through the Shanghai Post and Telecommunication Administration (SPT).

Under a memorandum of understanding that Microsoft and the SPT have signed, the municipal Chinese telecom authority will make Microsoft's Internet software available over the Internet, on CD-ROM and via other media, according to a Microsoft statement.

"The Chinese government has been very proactive in encouraging companies to provide Internet solutions," said Kay Morita, a spokeswoman for Microsoft.
