Be Inc. plans to offer its BeOS for both Intel and PowerPC processors when it is next released in January, company officials announced as they previewed the Intel version.

Be demonstrated the BeOS running on an Intel-based PC at its developer's conference in Boston, officials said in a statement, calling it the first time it had showed off the Intel version.

The company pitched the Intel version of the OS as having the same capabilities as the PowerPC offering. Processor performance characteristics, as well as the cost of the hardware, will lead to the main differences that users will see between the OS on the two platforms, officials said.

Company officials view the move as broadening the market for the BeOS, as well as broadening the market for BeOS developers.

Be, in Menlo Park, California, can be reached on the World Wide Web at http://www.be.com/.
