NEC's direct sales move surprises local distributor

Yet another PC maker has hitched its wagon to the direct sales model. Last week, in the United States, NEC started selling its PCs direct, as well as through the channel. However the local distributor, NEC New Zealand, was unaware of the move and general manager Derek Robertson says he has not heard of plans for the PC vendor to come in and sell direct here.

In the US, end users will be able to order PCs or notebooks, customised or standard, via the phone under a new programmed called NEC Now.

A product line called the Direction range has been spawned from the new distribution model and is aimed at the small office/home office market.

The NEC Direction line is available through direct telemarketing and Internet sales channels only (www.nec-computers.com). Systems will be configured to exact end-user specifications.
