Number portability will be in place for 0800 numbers by February of next year, according to a Telecom source.
The source, who did not wish to be named, says a memo has been distributed internally, instructing staff as to the reorganisation required to install the portability structure.
The move to portability will almost certainly negate the recent litigation taken by Clear against Telecom and the government.
Telecom spokesperson Clive Litt says that while the process of portability is under way, and is in fact ahead of the Australian drive towards portability, the major issue is the administration of numbers. “The request for information and tender process is well under way, and Telecom and the other telcos are working collectively to find an independent organisation to allocate numbers,” says Litt.
He points to the recently signed interconnection agreement with Telstra. Part of the deal was to negotiate a portability-pricing agreement, which is currently being executed by the two parties.
As to confirming a date for the move, Litt was unable to confirm the February starting date as a result of the confidentially agreement that the telco’s have as part of the portability agenda.
