BellSouth launches wireless Eft-Pos

BellSouth has launched a data-based mobile Eftpos system. Aimed at services such as taxi drivers, couriers and meal delivery, the service is going through its final market trial and will be available within the next few months. The system will run as a dedicated data service on BellSouth's GSM digital network. Keycorp, based in Australia, will manufacture a range of small hand-held and in-vehicle terminals and BellSouth will provide direct wireless connection to the transaction processing centre.

The system will run as a dedicated data service on BellSouth’s GSM digital network. Keycorp, based in Australia, will manufacture a range of small hand-held and in-vehicle terminals and BellSouth will provide direct wireless connection to the transaction processing centre.

BellSouth’s GSM digital network has dedicated data capability suited to mobile transactions — it can perform separate data tariffing and keep information secure over the dedicated network.

The terminal offers a number of options including a built-in modem which negates the need for an externally mounted mobile phone.
