Labour rumoured to be preparing telco bill

Labour is believed to be preparing a bill to tighten up the Commerce Act and restrain monopolistic behaviour. It seems to be largely targeted at Telecom and issues such as number portability. Whilst likely to be welcomed by the telco community, the bill is extremely unlikely to be passed. National is against any interventionist moves by government, as is Act, while the Alliance may also be unlikely to support any further changes to the current telco environment.

Whilst likely to be welcomed by the telco community, the bill is extremely unlikely to be passed. National is against any interventionist moves by government, as is Act, while the Alliance may also be unlikely to support any further changes to the current telco environment. Its manifesto favours renationalisation of Telecom.

Former and current IT spokespeople Steve Maharey and Marion Hobbs deny any knowledge of the bill.
