NZ Internet use and access both double in 12 months

Both use of and access to the Internet in New Zealand has doubled in the past year, according to the latest figures from AC Neilsen McNair. McNair found that in the third quarter of 1997, 16% of New Zealanders over the age of 10 had used the Internet in the past four weeks - a 100% increase on Q3 1996. About 40% of New Zealanders had access to the Internet at some location, as against 20% a year before. The McNair figures were released by Xtra, which employs the research firm to audit its Website. Xtra says McNair tracked a 77% increase in user sessions on Xtra between January and September this year to a monthly total of 961,415.

In Xtra's current "channels" structure, News is still the most popular channel, Entertainment now at number two, pushing the PC World Webdesign Award-winning Rugby channel into third place, followed by Excess Sport, Business, Kids, Xtreme and Community.
