BellSouth Corp. in the U.S announced last week a reorganization of its management structure with the goals of increasing its data communications business, offering faster introduction of new and more coordinated product offerings, and strengthening the telecom carrier's focus on its expanding wireless and international operations.

The reorganization includes a new division called BellSouth Communications Group, headed by Jere Drummond, which will oversee the company's traditional telephone operations -- BellSouth Telecommunications (BST), its data services and networks, and new BellSouth services (including long distance and video).

Increased competition in domestic wireless markets, along with the need to add new services in international markets, contributed to the reorganization, according to a statement from Duane Ackerman, president and CEO of BellSouth. The company hopes the reorganization will help it stay on top of changing markets, shifts in the telecom regulatory scene, international and wireless efforts, and emerging businesses, Ackerman added.

Drummond, who will report to Ackerman, will be president and CEO of BellSouth Communications Group.

The reorganization includes a slew of other promotions, including Charles Coe becoming president of BST; Odie C. Donald becoming group president of Customer Operations at BST to replace Coe, and R. A. (Dick) Anderson being promoted to group president - Complex Business Services. These changes, along with several other promotions, will take effect on Jan. 1.

BellSouth is a US$19 billion communications services company. It provides telecommunications, wireless communications, directory advertising and publishing, video, Internet, information services to some 28 million customers in 20 countries worldwide.
