3Com wins wins first contract for Telecom's IPNet

3Com has won the initial contract to supply hardware for Telecom's IPNet - but the door is still open for other vendors to get in on the project. 3Com's local distributor, Interconnect, picked up the deal by virtue of the US company's takeover of US Robotics, the original vendor of the access hardware. IPNet is to be a dedicated Internet access network available for use by third parties. It had been widely expected that its local call centres would be populated with Ascend hubs, used by the country's three largest ISPs - Xtra, Clear Net and Ihug.

“We’re looking to establish IPNet as a vendor and and technology--independent network,” says Telecom spokesman Quentin Bright.
