Sun Microsystems' JavaSoft division will detail the next release of the Java Development Kit (JDK), Version 1.1.6, at the Spring Comdex trade show in Chicago in two weeks, according to company officials.

The new version of the JDK will be as much as four times faster than the JDK 1.1, because of the inclusion of the new Symantec Just-in-Time (JIT) 3.0 compiler technology.

Symantec's JIT is a complete rewrite and features intelligent optimisation and improved code performance, said Allen Bannon, director of developer relations at Symantec, in Cupertino, California.

The JDK 1.1.6 is otherwise a maintenance release attending to bug fixes in the code. On the heels of this release is JDK 1.1.7, which is set for early third quarter, and JDK 1.18, expected by the end of the third quarter.

The next major release of the JDK, previously called Version 1.2, will be released during the third quarter, and Sun's HotSpot Dynamic Compilation Technology is now slated for a release in the fourth quarter.

Meanwhile, the policy and permission utilities for the Java sandbox will get much more sophisticated by allowing developers to give Java applets different degrees of access.

Also in early summer, the compatibility tests, the Java Conformance Kit (JCK) 1.2, will be released. JCK will have 1,100 test points, officials said.

JavaSoft also will release Java Activator 1.2 for Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator browsers in early third quarter.
