Fancy a drink? New Zealand’s two booze giants seem to have their minds on the Internet at the moment. A subsidiary of the DB Group, has registered a batch of domain names which would suggest thoughts of a cyberbottlestore – and Lion Nathan is battling a man who has dibs on one of its brands.
DB Group subsidiary Allied Liquor Merchants, which among other things, represents international wine and spirit brands such as Gordon’s and Coruba, recently registered the domains liquordirect.co.nz, liquorshop.co.nz, liquorstore.co.nz, wineshop.co.nz and winedirect.co.nz.
DB IT representative Carol Mahoney says the group has no immediate plans for the names, “but we are looking at future Internet opportunities.”
Meanwhile, Lion Nathan, which holds the domain steinlager.co.nz, is wondering what do to about the fact that it has missed out on the potentially more useful steinlager.com, which was registered by a New Zealand man who is declining comment on the issue but reportedly wants $20,000 to hand it over.
The case, and the general issue of domain names is covered in this morning’s edition of Telstra Business on TVNZ. A streamed video version of this morning’s Telstra Business will also be available at http://www.matcom.co.nz/tvnz/telstra_b.html
