GPs gain access to electronic refunds

Around 500 GPs are now electronically claiming reimbursements for medical services from Health Benefits Limited, a company set up by the Health Funding Authority. Electronic claiming, which started at the end of last year, can be used by GPs for reimbursements of general medical services benefits and immunisation, but doesn't yet apply to maternity services.

Health Funding Authority general manager Tony White says a pilot for this benefit is underway.

White says electronic claiming will lower transactions costs at HBL as well as allow additional information to be collected.

The HFA is in the processing of aligning its own systems with HBL, which will have doctors and pharmacists claiming via a single system.
