While politicians may have mastered the art of the sound bite, it remains to be seen whether they will take to the Web.

One Tauranga firm aims to change that. Smartvote (www.smartvote.co. nz) puts local body candidates squarely in the e-limelight, with pages devoted to each ward, who the candidates are and what they stand for, and eventually the site will include the ability to ask candidates questions online.

Roy Edwards, head of the group that developed the site, says information on Smartvote has been sent to more than 1000 prospective candidates around New Zealand.

Edwards is already receiving interest in the site because local body elections are scheduled for September 25.
