Communicator security fix posted

Netscape Communications has released Communicator 4.07, which fixes a JavaScript security hole. The browser is now available for download on Netscape's FTP site. The fix prohibits a Web site from launching a malicious JavaScript program that could read the URLs in the cache on your hard drive. According to Netscape there are no reports of this occurring, but the bug could potentially be exploited on any platform of Navigator 3.x to Communicator 4.0 through 4.06.

The fix prohibits a Web site from launching a malicious JavaScript program that could read the URLs in the cache on your hard drive. If you don't wish to upgrade to Communicator 4.07, the company recommends protecting your cache from snoops by turning it off. In Communicator and Navigator, select the Edit menu, then choose Preferences, Advanced, Cache. Click the Clear Memory Cache and Clear Disk Cache buttons (selecting OK each time a confirmation box opens). Enter 0 in the Memory Cache and Disk Cache fields, then click OK. The downside to this safe browsing tip is slower-loading pages, at least ones that you've already visited, which are stored in memory on your hard drive.
