It may be some time before a New Zealand government follows the recommendations of last year's select committee investigation examines the legal status of cannabis - but the Alcoholic Liquor Advisory Council is already anticipating change.
Although ALAC's Suzanne Jones emphasises the council's registration of the domains cannabis.org.nz, marijuana.org.nz, cannabis.govt.nz and marijuana.govt.nz is purely precautionary, ALAC clearly does expect at some time to be asked to provide an Internet health resource similar to its site at http://www.alcohol.org.nz
The current "Had enough?" TV campaign directs viewers to the Website, which carries a variety of alcohol-related health resources, including drink-drive guidelines and a Macromedia Shockwave-based test of drinking habits.
"We're actually waiting to see if legislation goes through that might extend our brief, and if it did we'd obviously be quite keen to do something," says Jones.
"It would be good, because there's absolutely nothing for people in NZ in that area. It's one of the major health issues and it's something no one has really picked up on."
