Release 5.0 of Lotus Development Corp.'s Notes groupware, as well as the Domino server portion of the software, will be shipped next month, Lotus president and chief executive officer Jeff Papows said at Lotusphere yesterday.
Notes and Domino Release 5.0, called R5, is "the most critical release ... since version one and by far the most ambitious of our efforts," Papows said at the opening session of the sixth annual Lotus conference.
Papows acknowledged that many expected to hear at the show that R5 was shipping and said the further delay was necessary to put the finishing touches on the products.
"We need two to three more weeks of essentially quality-assurance polishing," Papows said. "You will have the product, I promise you, in February."
Lotus will also ship a Linux version of Domino in 1999, according to Papows.
