Telecom has recalled a former head of corporate finance and veteran of its scuttled First Media Project to run the reshaped, consumer-focused Xtra Internet service.

Graham Mitchell first joined the company in 1993 as head of corporate finance, and served as general manager of First Media and general manager of switched and enhanced services in Telecom Network before leaving last year to work for Brierley Investments.

Mitchell was New Zealand investment manager at Brierley's, covering the airline and property sectors and new investment initiatives. Telecom says Mitchell has "a strong commercial background in the private sector," having managed pay TV, taxation and share repurchase programmes.

Theresa Gattung, general manager of Telecom Services and the architect of the current restructuring of Telecom's Internet business, says Mitchell "has the right mix of industry and commercial acumen to secure Xtra's goal to be the New Zealand consumers' online choice."
