The Internet Group has picked up on the overseas trend towards cheap PCs bundled with service contracts by offering a basic PC for only $999 plus GST to customers who commit for two years to Ihug's flat-rate Diamond Plan.
The 300MHz machines, which come bundled with Lotus SmartSuite, are aimed at "those setting out on their first Internet adventure" according to a company release. They actually retail from the company's PC-assembling subsidiary for $1500, but a $500 rebate is applied when customers sign up for two years' worth of Diamond account access. Diamond access is listed at $45 per month plus GST, or $480 per year pre-paid.
The machines are available on 12 months' terms with no interest or deposit, the company says. The $500 rebate can also be applied to higher-specced PCs purchased from the company.
"In the future we could see PCs being offered in the same manner as cellphones, with consumers signing contracts to gain significant savings on hardware," says Ihug director Tim Wood.
