IRD'S supposedly technical-neutral electronic PAYE filing system, ir-File, attracted plenty of flack when it became apparent that Macintosh users weren't catered for. That's been fixed but now there's another issue — this time with browsers.
When Computerworld's parent company, IDG Communications, tried to register on the system via Netscape it proved impossible. That was because an older version of Netscape was used and ir-File only works with version 4 or higher. (The 128-bit encryption software requires version 4.x.)
But helpdesk advice from Inland Revenue was that the system works better with Microsoft's Explorer browser.
It seems to be a slightly complicated procedure to use Netscape. An NCompass ScriptActive plug-in must first be downloaded. If an evaluation version of NCompass has been used, it is necessary to de-install all previous versions and replace all files during the installation.
