Whitcoulls general manager Stefan Preston has resigned from his position to concentrate on the bookstore's electronic commerce endeavours.

Preston, who says he will continue in a consultancy role on Web strategy and development, is working on a rebuilding of the Whitcoulls Web site which is expected to be launched in late June.

The new site, which doesn't have any code from the original one designed by Xtra, will cost about $500,000. It will feature more than a million items for sale and offer personalisation features such as a facility for sending customers personalised email. Preston, who in the past three years has run Whitcoulls and London Bookstores and launched the Bennetts chain, will remain on the board of Pacific Retail Group and Books & More.

Stepping into his position is Fran Stanley, who has been with the group for the past three years as sales and marketing manager.
